Obituary for Mary Lee Thorne

Mary Lee Thorne age 90 of Sturgis, Michigan passed away Wednesday afternoon September 6, 2017 at Fairview Nursing and Rehabilitation in Centreville, Michigan.
She was born December 24, 1926 in Sturgis, Michigan daughter of the late Leo B. and Wilma (Case) Purdy.
Mary resided nearly her whole life in Sturgis where she was a graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1944. While in high school she was very active in the band where she excelled in playing the clarinet. Following graduation she furthered her education at Michigan State University where she was a member of the band and the Sigma Kappa Sorority and received her Bachelor Degree in Education majoring in Physical Education. For a short time she taught Physical Education and Health in Benton Harbor, Michigan.
On June 30, 1951 she married Charles Stanley Thorne at the First United Methodist Church in Sturgis. He died April 1, 2007.
Not many will think of Mary without thinking of bowling. She retired from the Sturgis Bowl following 35 years of dedicated service at the front desk.
Mary was instrumental in the development of the Sturgis Youth Bowling program. She was a member of the Women’s International Bowling Congress and competed in 50 national tournaments throughout the United States. Mary competed in countless local bowling leagues and at the age of 89 she bowled a game of 251. She was an avid sports fan and would watch nearly any sporting event on television and always followed her Detroit Tigers. Charlie shared his love of sailing with Mary and the two enjoyed many sailing trip on the Great Lakes.
She is survived by three daughters: Julie (Richard) Eames of Sturgis, Barbara (Mark) Kidzus of Chicago, Illinois and Carol (David) Paul of Sturgis; two grandsons: Alex Paul and Andrew Paul; two step-grandsons: Richard Eames and Brandon Eames; one sister: Barbara Thrapp of Sturgis and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; one sister: Elizabeth Purdy Daunic and one brother: Raymond C. Purdy.
The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 P.M. Sunday at the Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, MI 49091, 269-651-2331. Funeral services celebrating the life of Mary Lee Thorne will be held at 1:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral home. The Rev. Jeanne Koughn of the First United Methodist Church of Sturgis will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis. A continued time of fellowship and the sharing of memories will be held from 2:00-4:00 P.M. Monday at Nikki’s located in the Sturgis Bowl, 1101 S. Centerville Rd. in Sturgis.
