Obituary for Michael Eric Bordner

Michael Eric Bordner, age 72, of Sturgis, passed away Saturday, Oct 13, 2018, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo.
He was born Jan. 29, 1946, in Sturgis, a son of the late Earl and Amy (Anderson) Bordner.
He is survived by his wife, Tonya (Davis) Bordner; his children, Amy Pace of Monroe, Phillip Bowen of Warren and Karena (David) Bailey of Mooresville, N.C.; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Laura (John) Klinger of Sturgis and Jean (Robinson) Bordner of Ft. Myers, Fla.; two brothers, Benjamin Bordner and Monte (Robin) Bordner, both of Sturgis; and many nieces and nephews.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents; a brother: Bruce Bordner; a sister-in-law: Beth Bordner; and two nephews: Marc Mead and Michael Mead.
A private burial has taken place at Burr Oak Cemetery. The family will host a memorial honoring Mike on Nov. 25, 2018, from 1-5 p.m. at the family farm, Mike's boyhood home, County Farm Road, Sturgis.
Mike attended Sturgis High School and was an outstanding wrestler and state qualifier. He attended Michigan State but returned to Sturgis to work construction. He became an apprentice plummer and ranked second in the state when he passed his final test. Mike worked for Frank W. Casslemen as a Journeyman Plummer. He served as the in-house lead plummer at Abbott Laboratory for many years.
Retiring after back surgery in 1988, he designed and built Freedom Hills Golf Course. He and wife Tonya owned and operated the course east of Sturgis for more than 20 years. During that time he took up golf and had a close group of friends that golfed early every Sunday morning. If weather did not permit they could be found playing a game of cards.
Mike was a very accomplished builder, building their home and many others in the Sturgis area. Remodeling jobs were his legacy. He could fix anything; repairing and fabricating equipment for the golf course and the family farm was a testament to his skill set. His mechanical skills will be missed greatly.
Mike's daughter, Amy Pace, came back into his life after decades of separation. Amy and daughters, Rachel and Becca brought immense joy to Mike and Tonya over the past two years. They spent hours researching genealogy, identifying photos, and updating the family history of the Bordner and Swihart families.
Memorial donations to the family would be appreciated to assist with expenses.
